H2020 - NobelGrid Grant
HYPERTECH Energy Labs have been awarded a large R&D contract from the European Commission (Project Acronym: NOBELGRID) focusing on the development of innovative tools and novel business models that can facilitate the wide deployment of Smart Grids and Demand Response around Europe. Hypertech Energy Labs constitute a leading member of an international consortium of renowned academic and industrial partners, led by ETRA I+D and actively involving NTUA and AUEB (Greece), ALGINET, BDIGITAL, SURTEL (Spain), UNINOVA (Portugal), FRAUNHOFER, DERlab (Germany), AIT (Austria), Engineering SpA, ASM TERNI (Italy), ECOPOWER, FINNOVAREGIO (Belgium), SICS (Sweden), ECRO (Romania), Carbon COOP, University of Manchester, GOODWOLFE (United Kingdom) and DNV-GL/ KEMA (Netherlands).

NOBELGRID is a light-house project co-funded by the European Commission under the H2020 Programme/ Topic LCE 7 – 2014: Distribution grid and retail market. The project has officially been launched on January 1st 2015, its duration is 42 months and it has a total budget of €13,9M.
The strategic goal of the NOBELGRID project is to develop, deploy and evaluate advanced tools and ICT services for Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and electric cooperatives, enabling active consumers’ involvement in demand response schemas and addressing demand flexibility as a key parameter on energy markets through new business models for Aggregators and Energy Service Companies (ESCOs).
Through the dual-use of telecommunication networks, and by validating the integration of distributed renewable generation and demand response systems, NOBEL GRID will offer advanced services, not only for DSO’s but also for all actors involved in the distribution grid operation and retail electricity market in order to ensure that EU citizens will benefit from better prices, more secure and stable grids and renewable electricity supply.
Five electricity cooperatives and non-profit entities will test new business models and tools for DER integration, Demand Response, Predictive Maintenance and flexible low-cost Smart Metering. The demonstration of the project results will take place under real-life conditions, with the participation of at least 20.000 energy consumers in the 5 pilot testbeds of the project.
The involvement of Hypertech Energy Labs in the NobelGrid project is mainly focused on the configuration and demonstration of innovative solutions for Context based demand flexibility profilng, Consumers' flexibility analysis, Demand Response strategies optimization and Human-Centric Lighting and HVAC automation.
